We are very pleased to introduce you to the newest member of our team – Cafe Manager Maddison Rowe! She has a cat called Jeff, a love of AFL (she’s a Pies supporter but let’s not hold that against her) and a passion for customer service. Read her Q&A below!
Tell us your name and a little bit about yourself.
My name is Maddison. I am 25 years old. I have one older sister and one younger who I am very close with and only one baby nephew who I love dearly. I have a pet cat named Jeff and I love to watch the AFL! Go PIES! When I’m not working I am spending time with my beautiful family and friends and deciding where to holiday next in the world! One of my favourite quotes is “everything happens for a reason”.
Where have you worked in your career?
I began an administration traineeship during year 11 at high school. By the end of the year I knew I wanted to leave school and continue working full time. So that’s what I did! I was with the same organisation for six years before moving on. Once I moved into a receptionist role, I began working at the pub overnight to earn more money for myself and that’s when my hospitality career began.
Why did you choose hospitality as a career?
Almost immediately, I found that I loved to make coffee (and was good at it, before any training) and realised how passionate I was about providing the highest level of customer service.
Tell us a little about your team at Boon Wurrung and what you like about working here.
The team at Boon Wurrung is full of different ages and different personality types that you can’t help but enjoy every day. No matter who I work with. I love working all day in the cafe and being able to look at the beautiful view of the gardens. To me, it’s an extremely peaceful environment to work!
What kinds of customers do you see each day and on the weekends?
Being the Australian Gardens, we see almost every kind of customer imaginable. From tradies, to school groups, to young mums, to seniors and everyone in between. I enjoy serving all customers, but my favourite group of people would have to be seniors. I think people at that age really appreciate and like to see a young hardworking woman like myself and I like to make their experience with me a memorable one.
What do you think makes customer service memorable?
I think the way the customer is left feeling is most memorable to them. If they walk out the door feeling like a valued customer and not just another sale, they will return for that same feeling.
What’s your favourite thing on the Boon Wurrung Cafe menu?
My favourite meal on our menu now would have to be the Asian Crispy Chicken Salad. The cold salad with the warm chicken on top and that sweet chilli yoghurt dressing is irresistible.

Funniest moment in hospitality through your career?
Sadly enough, I can’t really pinpoint the funniest moment I’ve ever had in hospitality. When I think about funny moments, I think about the people who I have worked with over the years and that together, we’re just hilarious. I love to laugh – always!
